Verrucae are plantar warts that are caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) which is highly contagious through direct person to person contact. Although harmless verrucae can be painful if they develop on a weight bearing part of the foot. In addition, the callus can form over the surface increasing your discomfort. A range of acid based treatments (stronger than regular ‘over the counter’ (OTC) treatments from your local pharmacy) may be used. Your Podiatrist will discuss these treatment options with you and suggest a management plan to provide you with the best care during your initial appointment.
The treatments offered at ARCH are as followed
Salicylic Acid Treatment.
Follow up appointments (up to 20 minutes) • £30 unless stated differently by Podiatrist.
Previous Verruca Consultation needed (If new Patient book First visit Routine Podiatry appointment).
Salicylic acid works by removing the outer dead layers of skin and triggering the immune system into clearing the virus. Thickened skin over the lesion will be reduced, the area around the verruca protected, followed by the application of acid treatment. The Podiatrist will advise how long the treatment will need to stay in place and offer follow up advice and treatment.
Verruca Needling – for whole treatment package, this included anaesthetic, dressings, and follow up appointments needed • From £195
Previous consultation required. The way dry needling works is to push verruca cells from the epidermis through into the dermis and hypodermis or adipose layer thereby inoculating the underlying tissue. This triggers an immune response, the appropriate antibodies are produced and over the subsequent weeks the verruca undergoes a natural deterioration before ultimately disappearing. This procedure is performed under local anaesthetic and therefore does not hurt. A recent study found that patients experienced minimal post operative pain.
There are many treatments for a verruca / wart although the results are mixed and the treatments are often painful. In addition, they often require several consultations.
Verruca needling is an effective treatment, often working following the first treatment. Patients can remove the dressing the within 1-3 days and continue as normal.
After the procedure a dressing will then be applied to the area and you will be able to walk normally although you are advised not to drive whilst the toe is numb.
